Starting our modern architecture tour from “Messe Wien” (Vienna tradeshow) we walk to the new fantastic campus of the Vienna University of Economics and Business. From the campus we continue to “Viertel Zwei” (“District 2”) and see the modern residential and office buildings. We finalise the tour with a view of the Krieau horse race track and the Prater Stadium.
In the last two decades, numerous new buildings have been built on the former world exhibition site from 1873. The landmark of the new exhibition and congress center is the cylindrical exhibition tower by Gustav Peichl.
The new WU Campus Prater was opened in 2013 and offers space for around 23,000 students. Another five building complexes from international architectural offices are grouped around Zaha Hadid’s central Library & Learning Center.
We then enter the new “Viertel Zwei” district with numerous office and residential buildings. The car-free quarter is the first sustainable urban quarter “Smartcity” in Austria with its own energy supply from renewable energy sources. Henke & Schreieck, Martin Kohlbauer, Chaix & Morel, Zechner & Zechner, Maria Cuccinella are just a few of the architects represented here.
More new buildings are being built around the area of the Krieau horse racing track.
